The largest I had done before were 4 11x15 prints, in 2006. Those took me 6 months to do.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have had a lot more experience since then </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and so felt excited at the prospect of working large. I worked from photos I took at an aquarium in Newport, KY, starting</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> with a line drawing of the two images combined - 24 x 36. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zSebmNvzNtw/W5TO3NLe7fI/AAAAAAAAldk/m9R6UCF5RZcTwa9P4YDudVBg1E9mW8K1QCEwYBhgL/s1600/20180720_152830.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zSebmNvzNtw/W5TO3NLe7fI/AAAAAAAAldk/m9R6UCF5RZcTwa9P4YDudVBg1E9mW8K1QCEwYBhgL/s400/20180720_152830.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Overlaying the drawing with acetate, I then started to color in the images, trying to see how few colors I needed to depict the fish and kelp and depth I sought. I selected color chips (the freebies from Home Depot) to target my color choices and prevent me from using ink right out of the can. I used a combination of hoarded Daniel Smith and Gamblin relief inks.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DCvrs3veuM0/W5TO3BraAHI/AAAAAAAAldo/m7GY_1Rwcw4K_zEX00kYNTi_fDWCCbtXwCEwYBhgL/s1600/20180722_193550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DCvrs3veuM0/W5TO3BraAHI/AAAAAAAAldo/m7GY_1Rwcw4K_zEX00kYNTi_fDWCCbtXwCEwYBhgL/s320/20180722_193550.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then I transfered the drawing to the two 24 x 18 inch lino which I had adhered to masonite. I used red carbon paper which I got from McClains and a black Stabilo marker to make it permanent.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BEL0avG9cHg/W5TO3ST6vVI/AAAAAAAAldg/Ny4H0xT2EtQifu33HpqU87PBETv6Z5S9wCLcBGAs/s1600/20180727_161612.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1269" data-original-width="1600" height="253" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BEL0avG9cHg/W5TO3ST6vVI/AAAAAAAAldg/Ny4H0xT2EtQifu33HpqU87PBETv6Z5S9wCLcBGAs/s320/20180727_161612.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I weighed whether to start printing with the light blue or the yellow. You can't get yellow over any other color, but the blue only appeared in the fish. If I printed the whole plate in yellow and attempted to print light blue I would get green, so I cut stencils to block off everything but the fish and printed the blue first. I printed 12 of each plate., using Ternes and Burton pin registrration</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I printed the yellow next without a stencil but I cut a mask to protect the masonite from stray inking.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The benefit of printing the blue first and then the yellow was the free green I got on the fish. And I got my bright yellow and pure blue where I needed them.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I normally determine exactly where each color would go in separate color separations. But working this large made that problematic. And I must say, the Sherrie York process influenced me a tad on this project. (See her blog Brush and Baren.) Because I had drawn the entire line drawing on each plate at the beginning, I drew in the areas I wanted to save as yellow and then cut that away and printed color 3. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was printing in my home studio and it has been monsoon season which means it is a bit more to a lot more humid depending on the day. After I printed color 3, I ran into problems and had to reach out to Santo Press master printer Brent Bond for advice. I turns out that the humidity had stretched my paper on this print with the large angelfish. The upper right corner stretched a bit above the straight and narrow. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I didn't see it until I was in to printing the 4th color. I had good luch with the second image but the first one was super stretching and it was raining outside. I was using a tympan, the pressure was too tight and my registration was wonky - and I was using pins! So I took Brent's advice and stopped that night and tried again the next day with less pressure and a single blanket and I was back in business. Phew! Because it was starting to look pretty darn good.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At this stage was I wearing myself out, so I enlisted the help of a fellow printmaker, Paulette Olive, to help me with the heavy lifting - actually lifting the plates on and off the press. It was much faster and way more fun sharing the studio. Each color took about 6 to 8 hours to print (25 in all). After carving away color 4 and printing 5, I briefly considered ending there. It looked so good. But I wanted to bring in more depth so I continued on with color 6.</span></div>

But that year has passed and I am now ready to be more present in my art practice both on the creative side and the administrative side. It's all about learning and keeping up. New technology is getting harder for me as I get older but I am determined to learn as much as I can.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the meantime I am furiously but happily making new artwork for my solo show at Five15 Arts@Chartreuse in September. My most recently completed piece is called "Covet" which was primarily created for a print exchange of the same name organized by Melanie Yazzie of UC/Boulder from her printmaker encounters at the SGCI Conference in Las Vegas last March.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hJG_8-E-r74/WzUi2do0DQI/AAAAAAAAjeU/jZHZJ8qhA4Qe3BFVNM2lCv35t1jGGJC_gCLcBGAs/s1600/20180404_172400%2B-%2BCopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1281" data-original-width="1263" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hJG_8-E-r74/WzUi2do0DQI/AAAAAAAAjeU/jZHZJ8qhA4Qe3BFVNM2lCv35t1jGGJC_gCLcBGAs/s320/20180404_172400%2B-%2BCopy.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Before I started on my print, I saw that two printmaker heroines I respect (Kathryn Maxwell and Emily Arthur) had posted their prints in process and they had printed on both sides of the 20 x 8 paper size. So I decided that I too would print on both sides. Also at SGCI in Las Vegas, I connected with John Hitchcock at the Open Portfolio and he talked about using dye which added splashes of color in his screenprints. So when I came home, I experimented with 3 different types of dye and used this new tool to create Side B of my print with a gomuban relief print of baby turtles. I used pieces of embossed paper to create texture in the turtles shells after inking and before printing. </span></div>

<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After printing the baby turtles, I sprayed two different colors of dye to represent the beach and water as they race to the ocean. Too much time has passed since I last posted. I seem to be better at Facebook posts than blogposts but will try to do better. So for a quick catch up - I had a one person show at Wil McNabbb Studio in Flagstaff AZ the month of August 2016. Work from my Dangers Ahead show was exhibited.</div>

In early August 2016 I taught a weekend Reduction Relief workshop in Napa, CA at Nancy Willis's beautiful studio. I will be repeating this workshop again this August 4-6th. Let me know if you will be in Napa Valley and are interested in attending.<br />

In September 2016, Five15 Arts Gallery closed its door after 15 years on Roosevelt Row. A developer bought our building and evicted us. He will be building a new building behind our old one, that we are interested in occupying, if all goes well. Until then, we were homeless until the Phoenix Center for the Arts offered us a temporary home in their own relocated gallery space. Our first show was in January 2017, a group show called "Changing Spaces". </div>

As a member of the Arizona Print Group, I was happy that the Seacourt Print Workshop in Bangor Ireland, exhibited our "Mythical Creatures" portfolio at their gallery in Northern Ireland. My print is seen over the right shoulder of the man below.<br />

<br />
<br />
In January, I enrolled in the spring printmaking class at Glendale Community College taught by my friends and fellow printmakers, Donna Atwood and Marlys Kubicek. One of the class assignments was a 2 color reduction linocut, to be printed at Santo Press in Scottsdale. Such a luxury to have Brent Bond print for us. We also just completed a two color screen print - self portrait - totally fun and great to learn a new process!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rthEx-fgHSA/WQeJBjvZW5I/AAAAAAAARAg/P-cEgQBulOoCcOakpqT7iwXfk7rTB_MxQCLcB/s1600/20170225_114956.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rthEx-fgHSA/WQeJBjvZW5I/AAAAAAAARAg/P-cEgQBulOoCcOakpqT7iwXfk7rTB_MxQCLcB/s320/20170225_114956.jpg" width="179" /></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jBJTOX5dELc/WQei4d2tUtI/AAAAAAAARCQ/IghKQzBqI1gXOYWJPFWfbssYTsTLsbX3gCLcB/s1600/20170429_130849.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jBJTOX5dELc/WQei4d2tUtI/AAAAAAAARCQ/IghKQzBqI1gXOYWJPFWfbssYTsTLsbX3gCLcB/s200/20170429_130849.jpg" width="160" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And gratefully, I have continued to teach printmaking classes at the Thunderbird Arts Center (the northern facility of the Phoenix Arts Center) My classroom was moved two weeks ago to the room depicted here, and I am thrilled to have a space of my own. Just for printmaking! I have two classes scheduled for the next 3 Mondays (May8th) - relief at 3 pm and a drawing based solarplate class at 6 pm. And two Saturday general solarplate classes beginning May 13th. There are a lot more classes offered for the summer so check them out at phoenixcenterforthearts.org/printmaking/</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Coming up, I am working on a 3 color reduction relief print for a print exchange with the Seacourt (Irish) printmakers. Twenty of them and 20 Arizona Print Group members are creating work based on poems from their locality. Five15 Arts is presenting the 6th Annual Five15 to the Power of 5 exhibition of 12 x 12 artwork from over 60 artists. I need to make something new for that and then in September we will be doing a political based show, so I need to work on those projects. I added many of my new prints to my website - wswillis.com so give them a gander and let me know what you think. I welcome studio visits from interested buyers!</div>

That is where I discovered I was a printmaker. For the past several years I have been the Department Head for Printmaking at the Phoenix Center for the Arts. I love teaching in the community education setting and sharing printmaking with those who never made art before - or since high school. We also provide a place for experienced printmakers to brush up on techniques and/or come to play.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am getting settled in at the <b>Thunderbird Arts Center </b>(1106 E. Grovers)<b>,</b> which is still the Phoenix Center, only in the north valley. It's a comfortable space and the residents in the area (and beyond) have really supported my classes. But printmaking opportunties are always limited to the few locations with etching presses (or letterpresses) so when Agustin Vargas asked me if I was interested in teaching workshops at the Mesa Arts Center, I was happy to accept. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Both facilities have open registration right now. The links for both are below.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Fall offerings at Thunderbird</b> include Solarplate Etching, Monotype and Carve, Cut and Color (relief) with a couple classes in November for those who want to create gifts/cards for the holidays.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First and Third Friday are over and 3 of 4 Saturdays too. One more Saturday next week and this show will come down. Fifteen months of work - challenging, interesting, failures and successes, but mostly all fun and satisfying. I have sat at the front of the gallery looking at the work on 3 walls and felt pretty proud of myself. The work is beautiful and everyone seemed to respond to it at that level. The gratifying part for me has been the emotional connection people made of a deeper level. I appreciate the kids and the elders and the various age groups in between who braved the traffic and craziness of First Fridays; and the friends and art lovers who attended my reception last night. I felt loved and connected. For those who couldn't attend, here are some images of the pieces which received the most comments.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The above prints are diffused relief prints. This is a process created by Moniker Meler of Stockton California. We saw it demo'd at a printmaking conference in Philadelphia in 2010 and tried it unsuccessfully upon returning home. A couple years ago we brought Monika to Phoenix to teach us directly and what a fun and impactful 3 days we had with her! We are still trying to master the process - to be able to predict an outcome. But the beauty of it for me is it allows me to let go. After the restraints and controlling nature of my reduction relief printing, the randomness and mystery is so freeing. </span></div>

But such is the penalty (?!?) for living in the beautiful southwest. The weather was weirdly warm in North Carolina where we spent the Christmas holidays with my brother in Charlotte. I'm not complaining mind you! I much prefer warm to cold, 110 degrees to snow and ice.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been working on diffused relief and monosilkscreen prints for my exhibition in May at Five15 Arts. My imagery is more sea-related than swimmer, but I'm not ready to talk about it too much at this point - everything is still in process. With lots of work yet to do!</span><br />

Marlys, Diana and Carol and I spent the day at the art fair and the next day at the Aquarium of the Pacific and Long Beach Museum of Art.</span><br />

I have 5 week relief and solarplate classes starting in March. When they are completed my classes no longer be held at the Xico facility. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am so happy to report I have completed creating my new website. It is www.wswillis.com. The process was so easy and whenever I hit a snag, my "guy" at Photobiz was able to magically make it go away! I have a guy!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am really not a techie person. I believe it is important to try to keep up with the changing world and the technology that keeps evolving. But I am far from comfortable with it. So I have spent over a week's time pulling images, updating my resume, and all the other decisions I needed to make about how I wanted it to look. I am eternally grateful to have had Diana Hartley's assistance in funtionality and helping me think it all through. I guess I have a "gal" too! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So please check out my new website and tell me what you think. I hope you find it easy to navigate. I learned about Photobiz from Sam Dahl, who created an easy to update website for us at Five15 Arts Gallery. Check it out too, at five15arts.com</span>Wendy Willishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03266577777419922879noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3788371985310037694.post-63384716034954154422015-10-25T02:20:00.000-07:002015-10-25T02:20:38.225-07:00Monosilkscreen Process<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I enjoyed another monosilkscreen workshop at the Mesa Arts Center, the past 2 Saturdays. The workshop is offered every quarter and since there is so much time between classes, I feel pressure to be ready and take advantage of the time available. So for the week or more before each session, I plan what I want to print and cut stencils and pull color chips for each concept.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UJGv7AQunRw/ViyY-KV_3zI/AAAAAAAAFbo/C24TLLaGtXI/s1600/20151017_120635.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UJGv7AQunRw/ViyY-KV_3zI/AAAAAAAAFbo/C24TLLaGtXI/s320/20151017_120635.jpg" width="310" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So with the stencil on the right I printed 3 backgrounds of a solid yellow/green. When that dried I mixed up a darker green and put the stencil down arcing from bottom left to to top right. For fun I pulled a 4th print of the stencil and the yellow/green over a plain white paper.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> When those dried I reversed the stencil putting it on the right side and tried to mix a transparent blue/green. But my first two efforts were not transparent enough and covered the first stencil more than I wanted. So I kept adding more transparent base until I got to this point on the last two:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AxbZ1fcN6I4/ViyZAr6plkI/AAAAAAAAFcU/A8shZoSDvk4/s1600/DSCN0433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AxbZ1fcN6I4/ViyZAr6plkI/AAAAAAAAFcU/A8shZoSDvk4/s400/DSCN0433.JPG" width="275" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WHYo5_EEfVg/ViyZALtkNGI/AAAAAAAAFcQ/WKmItcwlenw/s1600/DSCN0431.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WHYo5_EEfVg/ViyZALtkNGI/AAAAAAAAFcQ/WKmItcwlenw/s400/DSCN0431.JPG" width="280" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Not satisfied but that's what I had to work with. After the first Saturday class, I decided to print with a stencil I had used for diffused relief on these two prints.</span></div>

You can see why I might feel that way: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My print, <i>Native Son</i>, was included in the <b>Family Matters</b> exhibition at the <b>ASU Art Museum </b>this summer. Rossi Todorova organized the print exchange <b>SB 1070</b> which was donated to ASU's art museum. From that donation, they pulled my print and used it in the exhibition which ended July 31st. Someone saw my work and told me about it. What a thrill, to have my work in an Art Museum exhibition! </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vj8RHhD7zlY/VibOIN7EVMI/AAAAAAAAEmU/dor0wWYOtZ4/s1600/NativeSon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vj8RHhD7zlY/VibOIN7EVMI/AAAAAAAAEmU/dor0wWYOtZ4/s320/NativeSon.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NA0fcskQg-0/VibPMG7gacI/AAAAAAAAEmg/H8-oDmCadO4/s1600/20150731_131449.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NA0fcskQg-0/VibPMG7gacI/AAAAAAAAEmg/H8-oDmCadO4/s400/20150731_131449.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was contacted, as per my last post, by someone wanting to feature my work in a blogpost about<b> Family Art Collecting</b>. It appeared in <b>Phoenix Magazine</b>. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GBGV58MlQXo/VibI29pltPI/AAAAAAAAEl0/O0a5RP3xQaU/s1600/Race%2BYa%2521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GBGV58MlQXo/VibI29pltPI/AAAAAAAAEl0/O0a5RP3xQaU/s320/Race%2BYa%2521.jpg" width="270" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then Kim Larkin contacted me about participating in a show at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort for the <b>National Swimming Pool Federation</b> conference. I was one of 7 artists and all four of my prints sold from that 3 day show! </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--5TlX6OPvik/VibIDVp8QII/AAAAAAAAEls/si9E-Y9vun8/s1600/20151007_175043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--5TlX6OPvik/VibIDVp8QII/AAAAAAAAEls/si9E-Y9vun8/s320/20151007_175043.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I finished my print for the Mesa Arts Center calendar at <b>Santo Press </b>last week. Here is the final version.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OGPq2G9OmCc/VibM0GCd7lI/AAAAAAAAEmA/-g2faSfALbE/s1600/20151009_112940-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OGPq2G9OmCc/VibM0GCd7lI/AAAAAAAAEmA/-g2faSfALbE/s320/20151009_112940-1.jpg" width="318" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then today I got a routine email from the <b>NAU Art Museum</b> announcing a new show - <b>NAU Art Museum: Collecting in the Twenty-First Century</b>. I clicked on the link to see if I could see whose work was in the show and lo and behold, there I am again!!! The museum is using many prints from the <b>Passport Required</b> print exchange I helped organize for the <b>Arizona Print Group</b>. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X7Tn4XAG_TA/VibN2kj_F7I/AAAAAAAAEmM/BvtyFen-2RI/s1600/LaRutaTheRoute.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X7Tn4XAG_TA/VibN2kj_F7I/AAAAAAAAEmM/BvtyFen-2RI/s320/LaRutaTheRoute.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I mentioned how lucky I felt to another artist and she pointed out to me that luck didn't have anything to do with it. She said that I have produced a consistent body of work and that I work hard at getting my work out there. It is so difficult for an unrepresented artist to get their work seen and this is something I have worked diligently at over the years. And I keep producing new work. But it is hard not to feel lucky and much gratitude that my work is noticed and appreciated. I want to thank all the good people who have included my prints in their shows or writings. And for featuring printmaking!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> I can't wait to see what happens next!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It is such a luxury to have your reduction relief printed for you. Brent Bond at Santo Press is a joy to work with. I love the Mesa Arts Center - it's where I learned I was a printmaker! - and I'm grateful for their facilities and galleries. So supporting their annual fundraising effort is important to me. Each year artists donate prints to be included in the MAC calendar. A buyer can get 12 original fine art prints for $200. Such a deal! But carving out the time (a little printmaker pun) to print 50 2 color reductions, just isn't available to me right now. So with much gratitude, Brent printed the first color of my print yesterday. This photo is a test proof, not the final color but close.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Deborah Lewis freelanced a blogpost for Phoenix Magazine about family art collecting. It is a wonderful idea and I encourage one and all to start with their kids today. Most artists welcome inquiries about their art, process and prices from those who are sincere in their interest. Artists I know like to give small prints as baby presents so the baby owns original art from the get go. Birthdays are perfect opportunity to grow a collection. Let me know if you have any questions about my work. My email is listed on my Facebook badge on the right column of this blog. Or make a comment with your contact info and I will reach out to you. As I noted in my last post in January, we have transitioned the Printmaking classes from their Phoenix Center home campus at 3rd Street and Moreland to the Xico, Inc facility at 1008 E. Buckeye Road. I am not sure why but enrollment is off and it has been a bit disappointing. I am hoping that as the word gets out that the space is great and it isn't that far away, that things will pickup. One of the classes that has succeeded is the Wednesday afternoon Solarplate class and we are experimenting with new timings and new ways to print and ink the plates. Joyce printed a relief/etching combo with two colors that we all loved!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CZhNFGRIL4w/VV5kBaJFWWI/AAAAAAAABy4/4PVAEUZmPog/s1600/IMG_2126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CZhNFGRIL4w/VV5kBaJFWWI/AAAAAAAABy4/4PVAEUZmPog/s400/IMG_2126.JPG" width="330" /></a> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then Paulette inked ala poupee <span style="text-align: center;">a print of Tony in South Africa. It is so fun and exciting to see people drawing and experimenting with the diverse possibililties that solarplate allows.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-azVaF5ssJb8/VV5kfnx0WtI/AAAAAAAABzA/waxxqULm9D8/s1600/IMG_2129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-azVaF5ssJb8/VV5kfnx0WtI/AAAAAAAABzA/waxxqULm9D8/s400/IMG_2129.JPG" width="392" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The clearly most positive outcome of the move to a new facility was I was able to bring my Takach press home. After much reorganization and with many thanks to Diana Hartley for her assistance, I am thrilled with my luxurious home studio.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">So in this cozy space I am now working on a new body of work to be presented in my next show at Five15 Arts Gallery in May 2016. It feels good to have a year to prepare and time to experiment and learn new processes. My printmaking buds and I will be experimenting with screen printing, diffused relief and with a stencil cutting machine. So many exciting experiences to come and in my own home studio makes it all pretty perfect. LIfe is good. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">Besides the work on my new show, I will be taking my third summer printmaking class at Glendale Community College for fun, community and feedback. I'm looking forward to working on projects that will also expand my printmaking vocabulary. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">Steve and I are heading to San Diego for our traditional anniversary trip and visits with the best California friends a person could want. Also in June my brother, Jeff, is coming for a visit from North Carolina. While his artistic pursuit is mostly musical, he will end up a pretty good printmaker too while he's in my clutches, er, care.</span></div>

Printmaking classes at the Phoenix Center of the Arts are moving to a new facility, operated by Xico, Inc. a community arts organization located at 1008 E. Buckeye Road. This is about 2 miles/6 minutes south and east of the Phoenix Center. (Take 7th Street south, past the ballpark, 2 traffic signals and turn left). The building pictured is the destination - the yellow space shown is my classroom! New, lots of windows, light and space AND a 30 x 60 inch Takach press!</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The exhibition has closed and we are furiously working on new work for our next two-person show in February. I am showing all the work I had in this show because I am proud of it and I enjoyed making it. So much so that I will continue to pursue more fish related prints. There is something about the beautiful ugly creatures who live below the surface...hmm sounds like a metaphor in the making. </span><br />

Marlys's works are mostly collagraphs of creatures from the pages of the Illuminated Manuscript. They are creepy, weird and beautiful. My prints are all underwater creatures of a natural variety done as monosilkscreens and collagraphs. <br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sky Harbor Airport is celebrating the Superbowl coming back to Arizona in early 2015 by having an art exhibition focused on the 5 Cs of Arizona - our 5 major crops : cattle, citrus, cotton, copper and climate. But they are extending the 5 to 7 and including cactus and canyons. There are 8 large display cases in Terminal 4 and 8 artists have been selected to represent the 7 C's. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you know the paintings of Ed Mell, you might think his would fit into the canyons category but because the work is of storm scenes, they are assigning him to climate.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My swimmers will be in a case of their own in Terminal 4, Level 3 beginning August 23rd and will be on view until February 2015.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">October 5th will be the opening of the Terminal 4 Gallery exhibition of the 7 C's of Arizona and we will be represented in that exhibition as well, along with artists from the Airport's private collection. That show will be on display until April 19th. All in all 10 of my prints will be on display at the airport! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">If any of you find yourselves in Terminal 4, go to level 3 and look for my swimmers. Let me know if you see them! </span><br />

This fantastic weekend workshop started Friday evening at Nancy Willis's studio where we attendees were asked to draw with pencil on thin sheets of styrofoam which we inked up and handprinted. So FUN and easy. Good ice breaker and chance to get our printmaking juices flowing for the next day. When I was first starting out, Melanie Yazzie invited me to be in a print exchange. I made a 5 color reduction linocut - a major effort I since learned and because I put so much into it, I got invited to another, and another, and another. And so on. In a print exchange you create an edition which you send off and in return you get a print from the other artists participating. I now have an amazing collection of prints from artists all over the world. Another benefit is that the print exchanges are almost always exhibited somewhere, galleries, universities, and with Melanie's exchanges, the prints become part of major collections. These are nice resume items for sure. By participating in these exchanges, I have learned about some fantastic artists all over the country, and they have learned about me. It is so fun to cement this knowledge with Facebook friendship and come March, even meeting some face to face at the Southern Graphics Council Conference in San Francisco! </span><br />

This time (whatever was I thinking) I did a 7 color reduction. But I really loved doing it. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And now I am working on yet another M.Y. exchange - Animal Mammas and Their Babies. I printed the first of TWO colors and am happily carving away (my favorite part of the process) in preparation of printing this weekend.</span></div>

A lot happened with the opening of my exhibition at Five15 Arts for the month of October. My sister, showed with me and came for the Third Friday reception. We had such a good time. I wonder if there ever will come a time when we live in the same city. She is very settled in California and I love Arizona. I guess we are lucky we aren't a continent apart. <br />

<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vx9gWowSeV4/UsR8jujmt7I/AAAAAAAABFo/8J6GS3VX9g0/s1600/IMG_4059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vx9gWowSeV4/UsR8jujmt7I/AAAAAAAABFo/8J6GS3VX9g0/s200/IMG_4059.JPG" width="200" /></a>I had a great year teaching at the Phoenix Center for the Arts. The people who work there are just the most fun and best people to work with. And the students are so open to learning and happy to be there. This year I topped off my year by participating in the Phoenix Festival of the Arts, sharing a booth with Marlys Kubicek. It was a fun event and great to see so many people out enjoying the beautiful weather and great deals for art. <br />
<br />
NEED MORE STUDENTS for January Classes!<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-j2nJht2kIUw/UsSD06Z7cTI/AAAAAAAABGA/GkN8aMRwOCg/s1600/IMG_3916.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-j2nJht2kIUw/UsSD06Z7cTI/AAAAAAAABGA/GkN8aMRwOCg/s200/IMG_3916.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xe3Y0Dq92Ic/UsSD0xTUN5I/AAAAAAAABF8/o0KzFQyg_Ek/s1600/IMG_3915.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xe3Y0Dq92Ic/UsSD0xTUN5I/AAAAAAAABF8/o0KzFQyg_Ek/s200/IMG_3915.JPG" width="200" /></a>I will be teaching 5 classes in two weeks. IF I get a couple more students in the Thursday Monotype class. This is painting with ink on a plate and then running it through the press. Immediate gratification for those used to longer processes like oil painting. I also need two more students in Wednesday night Relief Printmaking. This class, for beginners, shows how easy it is to begin creating art with little or no drawing experience. For those who can draw, it is a way to make multiple original prints from a single plate. Students in this class have created editions for print exchanges where their work is exhibited around the country and the world.<br />
<br />
To register, or for more information click <a href="https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=21770">Phoenix Center for the Arts Registration</a>. Click on the Printmaking tab to see the classes I am teaching. I am also running TryMe like classes through Amazon Local - deals end Friday 1/3. Go to <a href="http://local.amazon.com/phoenix/B00H7IOLIA">Amazon Local PCA Printmaking</a> to get the deal and then call the Phoenix Center to sign up for one of my 3 hour classes. The TryMe type classes are for those of you who aren't sure you will like printmaking. So you get to experience the thrill of pulling your first print in a single noncommittal class. :)<br />
<br />
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope it is art-filled!<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My brother and sister came to town last week to bring Nancy's work down from Napa Valley. We planned this show, with minimum discussion about what our individual works would be about...just our own views of our family history. We didn't see each other's new work until the installation day. It is remarkable how well it all works together. Nancy focused a lot on us siblings and I had more work about Mom and Dad...overall there was a nice balance. And having both her and my brother, Jeff, here completed the Willis Family circle as we hung the art...the remaining members of our little tribe. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The work was well-received at First Friday's opening. Viewers related to the images, smiled, looked closely, perhaps remembering something from their childhood or family gatherings. Some asked for the story behind a certain piece. Our family lore is well represented here. But I love when the viewer finds their own connection...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I can't wait until our Third Friday reception, with Nancy here to meet and greet with me...I am so happy to be showing with her. A dream come true. Come share it with us!</span><br />
